The smell in my Rhino has been intoxicating with pots of autumn sown sweet peas climbing up their willow obelisks. It’s wonderful to be able to cut handfuls to add to vases and bouquets and either the kitchen or car is full of their fragrance. I keep the flowers cut to prevent the plants going to seed and as long as I keep watering and feeding I hope to get a few more handfuls. I’ve also just planted out some more that were sown in March and these have gone into the outside sweet pea tunnel which I constructed a couple of years ago. It'll be a sweet pea summer. Everyone has their own favourites and I love that there are so many to choose from. Each year I try new varieties and one day I will find my ultimate sweet pea.

Glass jars filled with flowers are delicious at this time of year. All you need is a couple of handfuls of this and that, snipped from here and there. The garden wont notice. Think about shape, fragrance, texture, flowers, foliage, grasses, seedheads. Start with a few stems of arching deutzia with their clusters of white flowers. Add a couple of stems of roses, cornflowers, nigella, foxgloves, alstroemeria, sweet peas, sweet williams, grasses, day lilies and stocks. Add a few more if you need them. You could even manage a colour scheme, something I rarely achieve as I always get so carried away. To finish off, tie some ribbon or raffia string round the neck of the jar. Et voila, the prettiest and most fragrant jar of flowers for yourself or a friend in need.
After you’ve done this take a look at the biennials you want to grow next year. If you want foxgloves, hesperis, honesty or wallflowers flowering next year, you will need to sow them asap.
