As I write the new year and the new decade are just a few hours old. It feels like the perfect time to pause and look forward, possibly over a cuppa and a slice of Christmas cake. If you are a gardener or aspire to get into gardening this year this is the moment to plan and dream. The days are beginning to get longer (not much, but they are!) and there are seeds to be ordered, changes to beds or pots or borders to be planned and grand designs to be hatched. The long evenings are made for lingering over gardening books, magazines and seed catalogues or websites. As you make your New Year’s resolutions don’t forget to include your garden. Is this the year when you will plant an orchard, renovate a shrub, start a veg garden, create a pond, make a cutting garden? Is this the year when you will keep a garden diary to record not only what you do in the garden but also the date a particular plant starts to flower, or to note a shrub which needs moving later in the year?
Maybe this is also the year when you will join us for a course or two to learn something new or to brush up your skills. We have all of last year’s popular courses as well as several new ones which we have been asked to include. We have seasonal cutting garden courses and have added dahlia and peony workshops which are already filling up. The various pruning courses are always popular, and we are running a specific fruit tree care course in February. The new Introduction to Veg Growing course is at the end of January and we have several propagation courses throughout the year looking at how to get plants for free. The first ten week Certificate in Practical Horticulture starts at the end of January. This course is full, but we are running it again in late April and September. The Introduction to Garden Design is back again in January and is followed by the Annual Maintenance Plan course which is proving very popular.
I plan to get outside to do a little tidying and weeding this week, and to sow some herbs and chillis in my little greenhouse. My own New Year’s resolutions include carrying a notebook in my pocket at all times, along with my phone to take photos, and making an annual maintenance plan for my own garden which will give me a monthly to do list. The course I am most looking forward to is Creating a Small Wildlife Pond. I can’t wait to have some water in my garden and a new habitat for more wildlife. Whatever your gardening resolutions we would like to wish you a very Happy Gardening New Year and hope to see you soon in the Walled Garden!
