Time to get those overwintering onions, shallots and garlic. Mark out a line with string and gently pop them in the ground so the tips are showing. If you have heavy soils, it may be best to wait until spring. To keep the risk of diseases low, make sure you pick heat treated sets and varieties such as Onion Electric which is a lovely shiny red and very tasty variety.
It’s all about the seed catalogues! Take a break during the rush of Christmas to sit down with a hot chocolate and reflect on your allotment or kitchen garden over the past year. Make plans for what you will grow during the next year and delight in all of the options the catalogues provide. Think about crop rotation and sketch out your plans. An exciting winter job!
Before the ground is frozen or too wet, give it a really good layer of well rotted manure and leave the nutrients to absorb into the soil before next spring. To keep weeds to a minimum, place a layer of cardboard down and then cover that with well rotted compost. The cardboard will break down over winter but weeds will struggle to grow.
