It’s been such a busy time on the allotment as the weather warms up and everything runs away with itself. No matter how much I plan over the winter months, it’s always a job to get everything planted out, successionally sow salads, weed and water!

My new allotment is taking shape after only accepting it last November so recent months have been about establishing it more than anything but having the Rhino Greenhouse has meant I can sow seeds under protection while I am outside clearing weeds. It’s been scorching sunshine on a few days so even in early June the blinds have been down to give a little shade to young plants. The water reservoir has come into its own, keeping the pots watered when I am not there.

I’m growing on a small urban plot so everything is getting squeezed in tightly, companion planting is a must and crop rotation essential so this year its trial and error to see how things grow, so far so good! I am harvesting some perfect lettuce and herbs, along with microgreens and spinach, radish and smaller chard leaves. It’s the best feeling when you’ve grown something and eating it fresh that day.

Throughout June I will be adding plant supports in for the taller plants and I can’t wait to get one of my favourite crops planted out - sweetcorn! This year due to space I am using an old planting technique where the sweetcorn are planted in a block, with Squash plants growing beneath and climbing beans growing up the sweetcorn as support. That’s maximising space!
