There will be days in the winter when the weather eases and the soil is workable, so if you are after your gardening fix, dig over your vegetable beds and fork in as much well rotted manure as you can. It’s always best to get as much work done in advance, plus doing this exposes pests, giving wildlife a welcome feed during winter.

Leeks can be a little hard to pull up in frozen soil without damaging them, so you can ‘heel’ them in by digging a shallow trench, trimming the roots off and putting them in the trench at an angle. With most of the leek exposed, cover the bottoms with loose soil and then lift up when you are ready to harvest.

It’s a great time of year for pruning your fruit trees, so get to work on your apple and pear trees along with your gooseberries and autumn fruiting raspberries. You’ll soon be enjoying a gooseberry fool and eton mess again.
